2010 Lecture/Presentation Series

During 2010, Pharos International is offering three research-based and fact-driven presentations on the topics of 1) Trust and Culture; 2) Gender at Work in Europe; and 3) Living and Working Internationally.

These presentations can complement and fit within your existing management development programmes, or can serve as independent educational sessions. They are ideal for internal management conferences, retreats, lunch, evening or afternoon sessions at work. Each presentation is designed to inform, engage and to stimulate thought.

Trust and Culture
Using Pharos' most recent research data, this presentation focuses on the importance of trust in the workplace, and reveals how our national culture influences our perceptions of our colleagues' trustworthiness. It also presents data on how culture influences our propensity and willingness to trust others. In work relationships, some cultures trust more easily and more automatically than others, and judgments of trustworthiness can indeed be in the cultural eye of the beholder. Behaviours that build, destroy or help to rebuild trust in multicultural organisations are also explored.

This presentation is suitable for all managers who are interested in building, enhancing or repairing trust within their culturally-diverse teams or organisations. You may wish to tailor the presentation by focusing on trusting ways of certain countries, such as the United States, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, France, UK and Italy.

Gender at Work in Europe
This interactive research presentation provides an update on the current status of women in the European workplace. It also reviews the latest studies on the barriers that still prevent women from advancing within organisations, and on the differences and similarities in men and women's management and leadership styles. By focusing on actual research, this presentation separates myth from fact. In addition, examples of creative organisational practices for creating more equitable workplaces are reviewed.

Living and Working Internationally
This research-based presentation provides an update on current global mobility patterns and trends. Given current concerns over cost-cutting, how are organisations meeting their need to develop international managers?  Who is moving internationally, where and why? Using the most recent global data, this presentation provides an overview of the current priorities and issues in management of international assignments. It also focuses on the realities and challenges faced by expatriate employees and their families, and reviews the latest research on cross-cultural shock, adaptation and performance. Complications of re-entry management are discussed as well as the range of personal and organisational factors that contribute to success on international assignments.
