Educational Programmes

Pharos offers a series of research-based presentations and training programmes to enhance the intercultural awareness, knowledge and skills of professional people working internationally. Detailed needs assessments guide the objectives, content, design and duration of each educational activity. Examples of these programmes include:

Intercultural Awareness and Understanding
This programme serves as an introduction to cultural differences for those with limited intercultural experience. Participants are introduced to the concept of culture and the powerful role of values and beliefs in shaping expectations and behaviours in the workplace. Participants also learn about the key dimensions of culture, and principles of intercultural communication. This programme helps the participants to recognise the core values that have shaped their own world view, and learn to recognise and adapt to cultural differences.

Country-Specific Programmes
This programme focuses on uncovering the deep culture of a selected target country as well as identifying its core beliefs and values that drive business practices. Through critical incidents, case studies and other methods, the participants become aware of the realities of conducting business with the nationals of the country in focus.

Intercultural Competence
This programme helps the participants to understand the set of attitudes, knowledge and skills that constitute intercultural competence. Prior to the programme, the participants complete an assessment tool that measures their own intercultural competence, and receive feedback on their strengths and development needs during the course of the programme. Suggestions for developing their intercultural competence are also reviewed.

Building Trust Across Cultures
This programme focuses on the powerful role of trust in building relationships and uses proprietary research data to demonstrate how culture influences various aspects of trusting preferences and expectations in the workplace.  Participants are introduced to cultural differences and similarities in one's propensity to trust, in judgments of trustworthiness, in forgiveness once trust is lost, and in ways of building and re-building trust. Participants become aware of behaviours that contribute to, or take away from trust building in cross-cultural relationships.

Diversity in the European Workplace
This programme focuses on managing a diverse workforce in European workplaces. Dimensions of difference that are of particular interest to this programme are: gender, age, religion and culture. The programme raises sensitivity to the impact of perceptions, stereotyping and sense-making upon feelings of inclusion and exclusion at work. Participants also become aware of management practices that help to create an inclusive and equitable workplace for all.

Expatriation Readiness
This programme raises expatriate candidates' awareness of the issues and challenges associated with living and working in a different culture. It also creates an understanding of culture shock, ways of reducing intercultural stress, facilitating the family's transition, psychological adjustment and relationship building with local staff. Prior to the programme, the participants complete a self-assessment instrument designed to assess the strength of their motivations and the realism of their expectations.
